NFL (National Football League)

How the draft works in the NFL was news to me when I first started researching it. Yet now it all seems to make sense, so I hope that my knowledge from researching the NFL draft will come out on this page and in turn help you all to speak about it openly.

What is the NFL draft?

The NFL draft also referred to as the player selection meeting started way back in 1936. The amount of rounds and team positioning within the draft has been revised a number of times since 1936, but today this is how it works.

How is the Draft organized?

The draft is an annual event where NFL teams select eligible college football players to come on to their team. The basic layout of the draft is each team is given a position in the drafting order in reverse order relative to its record in the previous year.

(Let me break that down for you; so during the football season records are kept of how good teams are playing. It’s all based on each teams win-loss record in the previous season. The best teams who have the most wins are lined up to pick LAST in the draft, where as the really bad teams who ultimately suck it up for the season get first picks)

Each team can either select a player to draft on to their team OR trade their position in the drafting order. If a team selects a player or trades their position their picking in that round is complete.  Currently the draft consists of seven rounds. For the first round teams are given 10 minutes to pick and each round after that the pick time goes down.

So lets look at the NFL Draft Tracker and see who was drafted and in what order (click link below)

One of my favorite stories that went around before the draft was, now MN Viking Teddy Bridgewater giving his mom a Pink Cadillac for reasons you wouldn't imagine, but they melt your heart
.  His story below

Random Facts that MOST people don’t know….

·      First draft was held in Philadelphia on February 8, 1936
·      ESPN first televised the draft in 1980 (the network televising the event did not think it would be entertaining. Yet today the NFL draft is on during prime time hours)
